Follow up...of sorts... to an old piece "red trinary" [link]

still on my conscript-themed short stories...

The brother musketeers eventually got caught by the long arm of the interplanetary justice league, and shipped off world to a war academy. The Pikeman went on to a high-gravity world's naval unit as a combat swimmer, the background swordsman a close-quarter battle specialist, and the leader of the pack, a heavy support unit on a world brought to its knees by an invading alien menace.

Finally ending their long term of duty, and leaving as forever-changed individuals, they met again on a free world. Inseparable, they used the only skills they had to survive as pirates of the wastelands. "Sand-diver", ruin skirmisher and long range fire support. Reunited once again as the worst killers in the galaxy, the brothers swear never to let themselves be taken alive ever again.
