Exogen Class Darktrooper by ukitakumuki Exogen Class Darktrooper by ukitakumuki
Whoever designed the Exogen class needs to seriously.. $#@^@^$@&%$^%$&#*!!@!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love dark troopers but I HATE THE EXOGEN class. GOD. I really tried my best to pick a flattering angle and make it look good.

Note to designer. Never copy and paste parts. It may work for 2d.. but these tricks never stand up to scrutiny in 3 dimensions..!! Come on!!

PS:
Done for Sony Online Entertainment's Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game.

Shout out to Roger Chamberlain, Art Director for the project.

what's the difference between a normal darktrooper and an exogen version?
is it true that they're in fact battle-droids? oO

I believe the exogen is an earlier model Dark Trooper. Phase. .. 2? The earliest was something with a vibro blade I think. Phase 3 would be the badass one with the assault cannon.[link]

If anyones rim-lit while wielding a huge gun in a dark corridor, they tend to remind themselves of Jin Roh too ;p Even without the trademark glowing eyes. It gets kinda unfortunate after some point.

You did an awesome job on the helmet, especially after seeing what the original content looks like...

Honestly I like your original designs more than Star Wars stuff.

Wow, looks fantastic! I gotta say though, you worked absolute WONDERS with the source material, yet kept the design in bounds with the references you had. That exogen trooper I saw on google images looked downright awful... It made me think of someone trying to avoid copyright infringements by modifying the stormtrooper design for another franchise. YUCK.

But no worries, this looks fantastic, and still holds enough of the original concept to be easily recognizable.

What I really love about it though,- and I this is what makes the picture for me- is the pose of the trooper. His legs are a bit spread, his knees are locked, and his torso tilts back a bit, with his groin plate lightly jutted forward to suggest weight compensation and distribution (for all that plating, of course^^). What all of that amounts to though, is that he locks his knees because he isn't built to be nimble- he's just slouched there, sealed in place, and blowing away any resistance for the other troops behind him. It just suggests that turning back or taking cover are not options (or worries) for him :D

Great job!

Aw thanks :) I'm really just beginning to enjoy and appreciate the subtleties of figure drawing. So hearing that is a bonus for me! I really tried to capture the 'diligent indolence' that a combat cyborg made to clear rooms every day would feel. After all.. his duty only ends with death :)

I dunno how many people spotted this but I gave him an olive canvas 'hip sash cum utility webbing', I thought it went pretty nicely with the white painted metal/plastic armour and the rather plain surroundings.

I agree with skittle about proportions of certain parts, but furthermore I have to say that it doesn't look bad at all.

Well, the torso-parts armor could be much cooler, aswell as the top of the helmet could have more detail, and the shoulderpads could have some attachments or something...

The face of it looks very badass and menacing though.

Very Great Work.

Now I'm really happy i put you on my watch list. :D

Thanks alot :) My job here as an illustrator was to reference the design as closely as I could, not reinvent it. I obviously took some liberties, (like adding a canvas belt setup that I felt went well with the metal, making him feel more tactical and practical) but aside from that its more or less in line with the design. The helmet was the most fudged with.. as you can see i brought the mouth parts closer together to give him more menace. If not this is what you would've seen instead: [link] I don't know what angle I could've chosen with that that would have made him any cooler looking. The other angle that I thought was doable was an extreme low angle.. but that had already been done by a really slick artist with an unbeatable lighting setup, so no way I was going to go anywhere near that approach.

I am not into StarWars Galaxies, so haven't seen this one before, but I think you made it look better in your illustration than it looks in the game-picture.

And, you COULD ofcourse do your own version of the design, unofficial, kinda, couldn't you?

Lol.
Why couldn't artists make their own version unofficially?
I mean, ive seen a nice XXL-size AT-AT walker, with a bit heavier weaponry, here on DA. For example.

We can, within reason. (art director both at sony and lucas will give the green light so long as we design within the art direction parameters) For example, I always make it a point to add grenade launcher racks to my ATSTs, and add a cupola gun for the commander. even searchlights mounted on the top rails and wire cutters on the top of the legs.

Of course I did my research first, and I'd discovered that Star Wars has been producing so much 'officialisd' spinoff material for such a long time with thousands of creatives having contributed every sort of idea... I don't think a single idea hasn't been applied yet within Star Wars context. So in a way its pretty 'easy' to come up with our own stuff and have it justified. Very little is taboo when it comes to star wars :p

And about the last bit, if you'd have Jabba and Leia making offspring, I guess that'd be tabboo. :P

darktrooper reinforcements?! What like you can get into contact with the arc hammer and send pods crashing down around you? What phase were the reinforcements? :D sorry, that concept has me all excited.

Now that would be cool. I get the feeling that by that time period the Arc-Hammer would be downed...but there were still exogens around for one reason or another. :O_o:

But...there was something similar back then. There would be lambda shuttles that would land in the middle of nowhere and drop patrols. There was one time that I had a rebel friend with me, and we had all set up camp on Tatooine, and a shuttle landed right next to us and chased them off. Fun times. :XD:

Cyborgs firing down a corridor with a bleach bypass and colour cross processing art direction like that of Black Hawk Down is killzone? I think killzone has alot more of a hyperrealistic art direction, without much colour processing.

I HAD TO DEFEND IT! :p

there's a beauty in something that had it's form derived from function not fashion. Like the SA80(L85) it is dog ugly but when you consider why it was done as it was then it becomes quite nice.
