Hi all! It's been so long since I've been able to post work that I've done!

These concept artworks were done in late 2008 for the game Front Mission Evolved. Front Mission is a cult-classic mecha franchise by Square Enix that inspired my love for robots when I was a youngster. It was an insane privilege for IFS and myself to have been able to contribute to it.

I took plenty of inspiration from the Michael Mann film of the same title for this image. :) It's not quite a robbery, but its always been a fantasy of mine to see mecha in a somewhat similar situation.

I won't really give away the story, but here is basically an invading militant group performing a blitzkrieg strike on a city. The 2 green terrorist Wanzers are creating a distraction with local law enforcement units as the main force heli-drops onto the highways of the city; using the route to hasten their advance to the city center (where they will eventually do more damage) and getting as many civillians involved as possible, thereby affecting the police's ability to respond with deadly force. Nastyy.

-With Skan's permission, I'd taken design liberties with some of his designs, throwing in my own ideas and flavour to the mix; hopefully providing an extra layer of 'grounded-ness' or grittiness that I felt resonated with the spirit of Front Mission. ;)

Any time, putting this up as a fav for inspiration.

I started painting recently (instead of sketch > lineart > gradient neatly painted stuff) and moving on from these manga/japanese style drawings, not sure how to call this rough painting style where you just start out with a messy composition of strokes and shapes and start defining light and color after that.. but currently doing a course in Game Architecture and Design and figured it's a way better (and productive) way of creating art.
Is there a name for this by the way? Figured it's mostly what they do on speed-paints but it's nothing speedy for me yet :p

I would also really be glad and honored if you could find the time to give me some critique on this, or some pointers perhaps. [link]

"Speed Painting" is what they call it, and it doesn't always have to start out with a 'messy composition of random strokes'. What you are most likely referring to is simply an experimental method of drawing taking advantage of the speed and versatility of digital darkroom techniques on a digital canvas. General art philosophy aside, in terms of Design philosophy, I personally dislike that 'Abstraction' approach because it is unpredictable and the dependency of happy accidents doesn't make you consciously aware of what you are achieving. This is the opposite of what you are already doing, which personally, I think is how design process was, is, and should be. A clear and responsible journey from A-Z. Like what you say you were doing and wish to move away from.

It is important to understand that Digital Speed Painting, in all its forms, is an experimental method pioneered by people who know their stuff. i.e Can draw awesome on any medium, and just decided to have extra fun in a digital darkroom. It could be part fine art, part experimental art, or intentionally to come up with randomness that a conscious mind wouldn't be able to do.

Productivity is also another issue that is debatable. Let's say you are my 3D/modelling department. If I throw you an alchemy sketch I did in 2 minutes, and expect you to make it into a tangible game worthy model, would you have an easy time? Leaving the rest to your imagination, do you think your work is more or less of what you are paid to do (now you are expected to do re-design ON TOP of modelling)? How can you model something you barely understand for example. All this while I am sitting at the corner smiling at you. Cause I have no idea what I just did either. :p

Speed Painting as a method, from what I finally understood after attending a talk by Craig Mullins himself, made me realise what an idiot I was back then to start out just 'speed painting'. Thankfully I never did go down the 'play with abstraction' route, but just plain speed painting was harmful enough for my growth as an artist because I never saw the importance of proper foundation study and so on, I was only interested in the end result. Its sort of learning and working ass-backwards. Long story short, digital speed painting has its foundations when matte painting pioneers like Craig's generation wanted a practical and faster way to paint. Having the medium in common digital format also aided production times in film to make everyone's lives easier. It is a method for seriously adept and highly skilled illustrators to use a different media to be even more productive or as a rapid sketching tool. It is not a place for beginners to get lost in, especially if you are still learning how to draw and are not at least 90% confident in your skills, like I was.

Even today I am taking steps to use more lineart and broken-down process in my work, especially when it comes to design because that's what I'm being paid to do. A clear, concise idea where substance, not flash, is what will make or break the design and make it work at the end of the day.

That said, you obviously seem to know what you are doing, but I thought I'd share my experience in what the nature of Speed Painting is. If it floats your boat and somehow in the overall pipeline the method works for you/the team/the project then that's fantastic. But if you get lost then you might know why. :)

P/S: SteamBot studios are a great example of guys who know their stuff, but use these methods to push the envelope with the full understanding that they can't come up with fantastic crazy shapes on a conscious level. This speed stuff from what I understand, is an aid for them to get a form they find interesting, and then reverse engineer from there to make sense of what just happened. Eventually, and only with a high level of skill, does everything come together nicely. Otherwise you're just left with useless material, in the production design sense.

To start off I really appreciate you took my question so seriously and gave such an in-depth answer.

I understand what you are saying and I'm glad you're putting me back on my feet. The things I've got on deviantArt isn't even close to what I've drawn in my life, I've already made quite some studies about anatomy and all their parts. Yet I'll admit my knowledge is far from complete, and so are my skills.

The main problem is don't have any specific style, funny thing is I recently figured out i'm even having trouble with the manga stuff I used to draw years ago, since I tend to adjust the whole figure to become anatomically close to correct.
I've always seen all these amazing works everywhere with the whole gaming scene becoming so big over the past 15 years, and after a guest-lecture the other day from one of the artists from Guerilla (Killzone) I got inspired to try something new.

I fully understand what you're explaining though, and you are right. Before I start messing with my canvas I have no idea what the end result is going to turn out, I do start with a basic idea of a pose, but since I start out with a dark tone it can quickly become something else when I start erasing and adding some parts here and there. When I do this quick enough, my mind somehow turns it into different ideas as I move on, it's amazing how quickly I see totally different things and how fast my mind switches around with ideas.
For me this was quite satisfying because by letting go a bit I would not only get more creative works, I also like the entire look. If I understand you correctly this is what SteamBot studios is doing but just for the goal of coming up with new ideas.

If you were to ask me to draw something specifically though, I indeed wouldn't be able to use this technique, so except for personal fun I guess it is pretty useless, unless you know what you're doing. And the other way around too, if I where to create a 3D model out of a drawing I'd need a fully understandable unobstructed orthographic view of the entire object. If I don't have one I'll have to make up things myself, and I'm pretty sure it will become something different than the Artist had in mind.

For now this thing I've been doing was just practice in painting for me, but it's probably a better idea to have a fixed concept of what I'm going to draw first. This has become a little addicting since it's a fun way of easily getting nice(r) results.

I still have a lot to learn though, I think I'll take a step back and learn some more about lighting and general shading, and when I start painting start out with a sketch again so I have a clear composition and general idea of the end product, instead of just using my fantasy to turn random shapes into something definable.

I will also look up the names in your writing, though I know Craig Mullins' work. Cool you heard the man himself speak :D I remember doing some of his tutorials on GFXartist, might not be bad to look those up again, been years ago.
Anyways I'll keep an eye on your work and keep I'll practicing my skills, go back to the basics a bit and if I can produce a professional piece of work in lets say 12 hours, I'll give speed painting a go again to become more productive. Nonetheless for some reason I still love the beauty of suggestion in those quick strokes, but understand it only works if you know where to put them.

If you have some tutorials or practices, or whatever which helped you on the road to where you are now, I would be very grateful if you could share them, I feel I'm at a point where I'm kind of lost and don't know how to progress.

Exactly Ron. You summed it all up beautifully. The approach is akin to a "lets pop a LSD pill and tape a loaded brush to my hand and see what happens in the morning" approach, mildly exaggerated of course. :p

re: Craig Mullins, not only did I get to hear him speak I got his autograph in my sketchbook! :excited:

Unfortunately I don't do tutorials because I'm still learning alot, but I might post some process shots of my works sometime. If anything, I don't discard old images from my gallery, so in a way the gallery itself serves as a roadmap or insight into how I scraped by these past years. Due to my lazy nature, 90% of my art was/is created for professional purposes. I do very little personal work or practice outside of work, simply because I am too exhausted. In many ways, my working environment in itself was good for staying focused and has doubled as my 'on-the-job' training if you could call it that. I suppose I've also been very lucky :)

Thanks again :) As soon as I get through these 3 weeks of deadlines and exams I'll start working on some new things, perhaps I'll start uploading some of my course work as well. I'd love some feedback from you now and then, all the "very nice!" messages are fun and all but not very constructive. I'll let you know when I upload some work worth looking at, and meanwhile keep an eye on yours :p so keep em coming!

(and though I don't believe in luck, you indeed do have reason to be thankful of the position you're in :D it's great if you can do what you love and making a living out of it)

Luck is just a layman's way of saying the universe is a series of cause and effect patterns. I don't believe in fate, but definitely how interconnected everything is. If I had never been won over by cool cartoons and games as a kid; I would never have been here today. If those cartoons weren't 'cool' to begin with, I wouldn't be here today. And so on. If anything I'm thankful I'm not screwing up more than I already have, ahaha.
