Only War: Shield of Humanity by ukitakumuki Only War: Shield of Humanity by ukitakumuki
Games Workshop

This was a cover done about year ago for Fantasy Flight Games' Only War: Shield of Humanity www.fantasyflightgames.com/edg…

As always, big shout to Zoe Robinson and Andrew at FFG for being great producers! (Also this was based off a composition sketch by Andrew!)

A Ministorum Priest and a special IG detachment, on the move. With a nice red signal flare or two for good measure. Framed against a nuclear sun. Always a nuclear sun.

What really makes this image are the worried, semi-sad expressions of the soldiers in the front.

The expression of the Guardsman in the bottom right corner with the visibly pitted helmet suggests that he had seen enough action that he lost the ability to give a single fuck. So much so that he's on the verge being able to repel away in single fuck he comes across.

why does a ministorum priest have the "I" symbol? anyways, as always badass prospective!

Hah, at first when I saw it, I was about to say that hey, the "I" is ubiquitous throughout the Imperium, used in a wide variety of ways and contexts. The symbol of the Ecclesiarchy, for example, is an "I" with a skull surrounded by rays or ray-like sprockets.

But then I noticed that the priest doesn't just have an "I", what he has is quite clearly an INQUISITORIAL "I". Not only does he have the three stripes on it, but he even has the superimposed skull.

I also notice that the Inquisitorial "I" is on the book at the hip of the priest.

Likely a small but significant error by the artist.

Good catch.

I just faved this.  I'm sorry; this is totally irreverent -- I don't know the game for which this was done, don't know the backstory, and consequently when I look at your superbly drawn image, what I see is probably not at all what you intended.

I see a Robopriest holding a Roman eagle with the SPQR removed and a copy of Webster's New Third International chained to it in its place.

I don't fave battle scenes as a rule but I sure had to for this one.  Anyone who threatens the enemy with an unabridged dictionary is in dire need of a Fave.

Again, I'm sorry for the irreverence -- it's beautifully rendered, and the priest's arm motion and cry, and the motion of his robe, are captured so perfectly.  Really top notch.

Don't worry about it. Warhammer 40k has a very loyal following, but it'd be idiocy to attack someone for appreciating artwork (especially of this calibre) on an art site. Lol. :3

Still, the 40k fan-base is always happy to explain to newcomers and the curious alike about the setting. I'm not as big of a fan as I used to be and eventually dropped out. That said, have a good one. :)

That's actually pretty damn accurate. Also, the setting was founded on GrimDark, being intentionally over-the-top brutal to the point of absurdity and sneaking in a surprising amount of social commentary using the various factions as representatives. Oh, and sarcasm and black humour, can't forget those two.

The guy on the left's helmet looks a bit tilted, but otherwise, awesome as usual :D

Fantastic!  We love the titans in the background and the way you drew the Leman Russ behind the priest.  Leman Russ tanks usually appear so stocky and kinda goofy looking, but we'll be darned if you didn't make it look like a true blue, totally awesome main battle tank!  And the look on the faces of the guardsman in the foreground is wonderful.  It really adds a lot to the picture.  Great job!

Sorry to ruin your enjoyment but that's a Baneblade drawn directly behind the priest, not a Leman Russ ; and the two other tanks present on the left are Chimerae. See the lascanon present upon the side bolters, and the vindicator canon that aim right next to the priest's book ? That's a typical Baneblade heavy tank pattern.

Demolisher, not Vindicator. The Vindicator is a SM equivalent of the IG's Demolisher tank, which is, in fact, named after the cannon.
