PLANETSIDE 2 Pre-Viz: CUD-1 by ukitakumuki PLANETSIDE 2 Pre-Viz: CUD-1 by ukitakumuki
Concept art 2012 Sony Online Entertainment LLC. SOE. All Rights Reserved.

---------------------------------------------------------
Planetside 2 is out soon! Watch the trailer here: [link]
---------------------------------------------------------

So, with the new trailer out, and the tonnes of beta footage, concept art and media floating about I think its safe to release some of my pre-viz work I did for SOE from 2009-2010.

More on this piece:
-Like the Vaio? But... more hardcore? <_<
-Again, given the current art direction its highly unlikely you'll see this in game. Probably back to Planetside 1 style pistol/laser designator!

Thanks! My aesthetics but the ideas were all supplied by them really. At least the old team :)

Foundation, foundation, foundation :) Even for the 'pros'. Everything else is subjective.

So pretty much just practice all the fundamentals when we can?

Understand the fundamentals -properly- first. Practice amounts to pretty much nothing without proper understanding of what it is you are doing. One is just physical the other is mental. For illustrative art, mental flexibility is more important than muscle memory, so to speak. So for example when you practice drawing people it makes a lot more sense to learn about the big picture first, how muscles and bones and skin work, and how every part comes together, before going into detail. With just a few proper basic 'buildin blocks' of knowlege you can make very accurate educated guesses that generate realistic results. On the flipside if you just spam drawing figures with no clue as to anatomy and so on, you will just have thousands of drawings done with no idea why they are good or bad. Kinda like understanding how multiplication works, rather than rote-learning the multiplication table, which is impossible.

Thanks for the tip! I'm currently learning lighting and rocks. SO practicing lighting on rocks or creating rocks from light cause' it seems easiest (gray-scale). But how did you start to learn and what did you do?

What you said sounds about right :) Creating rocks from light sounds right :) I started all over the place, mostly by gut feel and some educated guesswork!

I like the idea of a battlefield laptop but in the case of directing artillery I can understand why they went with a pistol arrangement. Easier to carry and more natural of a movement to aim and point it in the heat of battle.

They still could have changed the mechanics to have spotters operating further back from the front lines and requiring coordination from teammates to bring down artillery. They'd be vulnerable when set up for spotting but they're virtually blind without team assistance.

Yeah, this was part of the client's brief :) I suspect it has to do with trying to create some familarity for the COD community :p

All the Info-related stuff you could ever need, complete with a three-day battery life and flexible screen? Who wouldn't want this IRL?
It also looks slick, even though I normally prefer a rugged look to stuff like this.
