---------------------------------------------------------

So, with the new trailer out, and the tonnes of beta footage, concept art and media floating about I think its safe to release some of my pre-viz work I did for SOE from 2009-2010. I will be releasing in the order of what is only out already in the media, and then finally once the game is 'gold' then the rest will follow in updates to come.

Planetside ([link]) was, and is, an unimaginably amazing true-MMOFPS franchise that should have taken the world by storm 9 years ago. It was the only game back then that could hold my attention for more than 7 minutes. Defending a hard-earned facility, Mass Gal drops, MAX Raids had me rushing home from school and logging on and doing my part for the TR/Vanu. Most of the defining moments of my life's gaming experience is credited to Planetside and its open-world 'sandbox' nature, allowing hundreds of players to wage epic freaking war in a 24-hour long persistent world server. The network connectively was surprisingly sharp, and the frenetic gameplay, camaraderie and immersion to be had was nothing short of exhilarating.

I eventually left the game due to the introduction of BFRs (Don't get me wrong it was fun as a Collosus killing shit and acting out my Mechwarrior fantasies on live human opponents, being a troll even before it became a popular meme, but the entire battlefield dynamic just changed too drastically for comfort. I mainly enjoyed the combat with 50% infantry, 30% armour, 20% air vehicle mix...)

Fast forward 6 years, and right after finishing up my Space Vagabonds commission and wanting to take a holiday, a phonecall came in from SOGA Taiwan. It was for a project titled Planetside Next. I think I screamed a bit. A combination of self-doubt, horror, and eventually facemelting joy followed by a frantic followup email and a test and the job was awarded to us at IFS! :) (Helped to be a fan and swearing on my life that I'd do my best to homage Planetside and update it respectfully, too.) It was then supposed to be just a revamp of Planetside, a sort of Planetside reimagined. Explains why you don't see glass cockpits on my vehicle concepts, that was an early creative decision when they weren't sure they wanted to show off the characters or not due to engine limitations (IIRC they wanted to vastly increase the player count with the same engine or something, so something had to give). I also chimed in saying it was fantastic idea, because we'd be able to create a truly hard-sci fi futuristic look where high end optics were commonplace, removing the need for fragile transparent components. A cold, hardened look that is reminiscent of drones. I still think its a great meaningful look, and I always feel kinda broken-hearted when I see how in the current iterations the cockpit areas of my designs got carved up into glass, because it was a real labour of love for myself, and the early team members (GM John Laurence, Programmer/PM Steve Wang, AD William B. Yeatts) that went into designing all that stuff.

While I may not agree aesthetically with those changes, I can definitely appreciate and understand why they went the direction of showing off glass cockpits and crew especially now that the project has the brilliant Forgelight engine to bring that world to life. (Don't get me wrong, if its an open canopied jeep or ATV by all means uncover it all, show the crew, the rawness and exposure has beauty too... just that my design approach at the time was simply based around the original principle of being a hardened cockpit coffin and the pilot buried behind layers of protection. To my mind, it is very hard to just swap a part out and change the context and expect the design to carry the same meaning anymore. Players might not ever care, but I just felt the need to say my peace on that tiny matter. :) )

So anyways, I spent almost an entire year (2009-2010) on the project. It was one of the most transformational periods of my life professionally and testing in my personal life as well; the relationships forged and artistic growth, the incredible brain drain endured along with the soaring creative highs, no money can buy any of that. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to have experienced it all and especially to have worked on the project of my dreams alongside some amazing people (credited above!), the game that made me a gamer. Can't wait to show more when I can and I sincerely hope my efforts have added to the joy of fans worldwide! Long live Planetside! :)

More on this piece:
-I was tasked with coming up with modular attachments and gear in order to make a 'faction uniform'. These would need to look good together, as best as possible, given the proposed freeform structure in which a player could outfit him/herself. The way a player model is put together would also affect the attributes of the character, leading to the creation of classes and roles.

Your concept is hands down better then the flashy, candy coloured planetside 2 thing.

It boggles my mind( about planetside2 beta), why is it that in the future camouflage suddenly is a non-existing.

Cheers

I just finished up another session of PlanetSide 2 and I am LOVING IT! I'm addicted. Thought I'd see if anyone had some glorious PS2 art and here I see your work and can't believe how much more awesome everything would have looked in the game using your work :S
Its like an 'ugly' 3d model & texture brush tool was painted over everything currently in game (minus the structures?).

Hi Chris! Am honoured :) Well.... its been 2+ years now...what can I say :) Nothing I've said to death already. heh. You know what I find most strange.. is the kind of funky stuff they have on sale in the stores. Have you seen the apex helmet? Seriously. :| See, the way I see it, even if my designs weren't up to spec for the game's art direction now, I think the 'aesthetic' margin for them is pretty darn wide and not exactly hard to accept, they were designed to be mass market enough! I mean, it wouldn't cost them much to get one of their interns to just reimplement the 3D stuff I did for them.. or just model off my concept art a few of these bits and pieces... I know I'd buy my own shit for $7.00USD... I already threw $140.00 their way so far!

Hey :) Haven't seen that Apex helmet (at least consciously) but its definitely not my style. I think all the bright PS2 colours have warped some artist minds (or their masters). Crazy stuff! Who knows whats to come :S

I haven't been playing it as heavily as I initially did, I guess that happens with most games, but I think that it's mostly due to being in a small structured outfit (taking orders is great, giving them is a horrible experience and puts me off playing lol) but also because taking a continent over and over is feeling a little old.

I'd 2nd that about reimplementing your stuff! Hope someone up top gives it all a good long think. Can always hope! ... goodness, last time I was on I was close to an NC default blue n yellow Liberator taking off I was taken aback by the terrible window frames. Not sleek at all like your stuff! Hey did you ever design the initial Lib?

I'm tight so only threw about $75 their way :P

Haha, I think the whole giving and taking instruction thing comes with practice :)

Also! No I never touched the liberator, only the stuff I posted here :) It did cross my mind at some point that if perhaps they kept the liberator 2 seater, and the reaver went back to common pool with an added gunner seat, it might be a more straightforward way to make air combat roles more defined. The Mosquito would be your lightweight fighter, your Reavers would be 2 man gunships and multirole platforms, and your liberators would be heavyweight specialists for bombing runs or anti armour gunruns... like an A10! Doesn't address the scythe issue but I suppose the Vanu can be treated as a technologically standalone race.

I think your armor design is much better and badass than what we have in the game. Becouse in game all armors looks like they were creatad by children using a simpla plastic

Agree 100% with both those points... I think the word to describe the current in-game characters/armour is: made with play dough by a child.

The crappy bit about velcro is the noise eh :( But between buttons and velcro... I prefer buttons if only for the fact they don't 'wear out' like velcro does.

Yeah, those Vanu action figures...

Overall though, a little too generic sci-fi for me. Very conventional shapes. The standard trooper types are a bit bland. The stuff in the latest Tribes game is much stronger, I think.

Interesting you mention Tribes. The new jetpack in Planetside really reminds me of Tribes come to think of it, the entire jump and ski thing, yeah? Tribes had this Blood Eagle faction, I forgot which version of the game. It looked like a Warp Spider with insane Sydney opera house looking jetpack, that was just so sick. It looked like all my favourite things rolled into one, at least at the time haha. [link] The guy the the left, couldn't find a nicer picture. (I know right.)

Hell, Planetside IS Tribes on an MMO scale! :o

You do know there's a new Tribes(:Ascend) game, right? This is an example of the Blood Eagle soldier class >> [link] There's no more jump pack dude, now that every class has that ability to varying extents. Some of the designs are a little busy, but overall quite good, and certainly much better than the lot in the previous version of the game.

Oh! Yes I've seen that, I agree with the busy bit, its a real thing with the US designers it seems, eh? More is more :p

The designs are certainly more 'handsome', but fall into the 'generic good looking' stuff, which lacks a bit of character to me. The Heavy was quite a bit overboard in the greeble for my tastes. In a sense, I did enjoy the older games because they forced the designers to work with less and not depend on detail to work for them, if you know what i mean. [link] << love the blood eagle here, the forms read well to me and whoever handled the 'brown generic console' look was a damned genius. I found it charming, at least. :)

Yeah, the whole more-is-more thing got old quick. Greeble masturbation, lol ;) Indeed the Heavy is packed with stuff; c'mon guys, let the thing breathe!

The forms of that BE in the pic do read well, but the thing that bothers me is how evenly the grey parts are spaced throughout the design... red bit, grey bit, red bit, grey bit, and so on. What I think the new designs do better (though with the aid of a higher poly count) is use the red over a more varied array of shapes without having to rely upon another colour to add interest.

And yeah, that console is great; it's a bit Kubrick's 2001 crossed with a Braun record player. Love how it leads the player inexorably to the monitor.

And henceforth, GREEBLE FAP was born. Haha!

You make a fine point about the evenness of it all, maybe the colour was the easiest to filter in my mind. What always gets to me is surfacing and clutter, strangely enough. Probably a phase, one that was brought about after spending so much time with modelling my own designs and starting to appreciate minimalist designs as a result, heh. The minimalism, in that sense, of the designs, were what pleased me. The colour uniformity I didn't really care so much about as skins/paintjob would allow more flexibility there. Topology though... that just stays and never leaves. Like no amount of paint can fix a bad car.

Braun! Exactly. So German :) So awesome.
