STRAIN: Coming soon to Mobile and PC by ukitakumuki STRAIN: Coming soon to Mobile and PC by ukitakumuki
Its been almost a year away from DA now... damn, does time fly.

I've spent pretty much all my free time this past year and a half on pursuing my indie game dev dream with some talented dev pals from Touch Dimensions.

This is basically the menu screen for a humble premium title I am the lead designer/creative director on-- one that is my love letter to old school hardcore top-down tactical shooters/ARPGs.

We are aiming for submission to the Apple store for vetting in about a months time~ and we'll be doing optimisations for Android and eventually for the PC. Can't wait to share more meaty marketting shots/vids, etc soon!

THE LOWDOWN:
----------------------------

As for Strain...

Its a semi-hardcore game set in an apocalyptic future where the earth is overrun by a space-borne infectious strain. (Think The Thing.) Thematically, the game is trope-y and homage-y and fairly self-aware and I'd like to think is a love letter to its inspirations. :) (Smile) But from a functional game-play perspective, we hope it comes across as a tight, finely-tuned tactical ARPG experience, driven by elegant mechanics and innovative controls that excels on mobile devices.

You're a re-cloned war veteran who is put in Command of up to 5 Ground Team members, and are tasked to lead a special task force to defeat this alien Strain in your region.

You play from the vantage point of a helicopter(the Helibase) overlooking the action. The game features 78 playable units with varying personalities(traits) and self-preservation AI that for example, automatically position themselves out of harms way, with you acting more like a tactical controller who oversees their positioning on the battlefield.

This functionality is to accommodate players who lack finger-dexterity, but by NO means exhausts any kind of finesse-based play for more hardcore types. There are manual-override features that allow you to control individual units and their firing arcs all in real time and on the go, with elegant and intuitive controls. This means that it can be as "Command and Conquery" or as "Syndicate" as you can handle.

It has a physics-based combat system with fully realtime projecticles, inventory management and as mentioed earlier, Psychological management as a key feature.

The Helibase itself where you reside acts as a 'level' unto itself where you can board your units to ferry them from your home base to mission sites and back again.

This Helibase also features weapons systems that you use, as the gunner, to support your Ground Team from above. :) (Smile)

Lastly, no "zombie-alien" game should be without an infection mechanic. Infection/decontamination plays into how you choose which of the 78 playable characters (clones) round out your ideal Ground Team. You can recruit Droids that do not get infected nor suffer psychological penalties, but have deficits in other areas.

The CSWAT teams are more diabolical now in that they will go full rogue.. And switch to a specially made 'rogue' faction where previously they just went postal. So basically now they go postal together as long as they turn. If u have one cswat next to another and he breaks.. He will most likely turn his cswat buddy with him after attacking for a bit. Lol

Ps: the drones and droids were always there.. Just didnt have time over dim summ haha.

Wait so does that mean they stay in this "rogue faction" state forever or they're still able to calm down after a while? Haha.

Oh hahaha yeah 2-3+ hours was definitely not enough time.

The way you describe the core game-play and the AI gives me feelings of some of my favorite strategy games blended nicely together. However, I shall reserve my expectations, because split-second decisions may be made to make up for any particular reason(s). Still, I look forward to seeing a demo reel of some gameplay in the near future, because this game sounds awesome.

Raven: *GASP!* Awesome

Like, really awesome.

I'm not sure how I feel about the mobile mechanics and innovations, though. Because that generally means watered-down and simplistic game-play just so the game can run on mobile devices and gain a wider audience. Just look at what Relic has done with Dawn of War III; the Dawn of War and Company of Heroes games are some of my favorite strategy games of all time and it saddens me to see how "dumb-downed" they made it to appeal to a wider audience, making it inclusive rather than exclusive, which is usually a bad choice to make on a developer's part.

Now, granted, Dawn of War III is being made only for Microsoft Windows, but it still incorporates the limitations seen in mobile games in order to make it more accessible to a larger player-base. That's understandable and all, but a player-base has already been found. You want to keep that player-base, not alienate it. But, I digress... and am getting a little off-topic.

I guess my overall concerns that I'm trying to express are these: will these mechanics and innovations that were made for compatibility on mobile devices be impeded in their ability to excel on the PC? And what I mean by that is will it be the exact same game on both platforms? And if so, how big will this game be and exactly how many features will it have? And how will that effect the overall price of the game?

And that brings me to my last concern. As a consumer, I want to make sure I invest in something that I get my money's worth with. There are a LOT of games that promise so much and when you pay a fairly large amount and finally own the game, you find that the developer(s) didn't deliver on most of those promises, therefor paying full price for only half (or less) of a game (Gearbox Software's Duke Nukem Forever and Colonial Marines anyone?) I want this game to be as transparent as possible. And what I mean by that is I want you to be as honest with your product as possible. No pre-rendered or scripted game-play, no promising features that will never be implemented, and for the love of the God-Emperor, please do not make day-one DLC, season passes, pre-order bonuses, and/or have DLC that's already in the game and have us pay to unlock it.

I want you guys to deliver this game to use like games where in the late 1900's and early 2000's. I want you guys to show how awesome your game is in the most honest way possible that you remove any expectations we may have and replace it with so much anticipation that our heads explode!

Mind... Blown

Thanks for the response! I would say, in short, that it is precisely the watered down shit that i hate, and is what gave us the impetus to make Strain what it is. I wouldn't be calling it a love letter if it didnt meet my own expectations. Nor am I that shameless :p

The mobile platform isnt a limitation imo. Thats like comparing consoles to PC.  Its just in the controller. So while yes we are benchmarking n optimising for older phones (like my own shitbrick) we are fiercely proud of the control scheme. Have you guys played Autumn Dynasty? That was done by my dev buds ages ago. This is our reimagining of it.

Finally as a dev (not unlike yourself?) I finally feel what I imagine most do when its time to market the work... Surely expectations may never be met and so im trying to be as authentic as possible amd channel my gamer side in terms of being shown precisely what I will expect to experience, nothing more, or less.

NOT LIKE WE HAVE THE TIME ANYWAY HAHA

Right, so, till some proper media comes your way, thanks for the great pre feedback!

I have just taken a look at Autumn Dynasty. And holy crap. That game looks awesome. It looks like a simply concept, but it appears to be executed in a complex and compelling way, while still being easy to understand. I remember seeing it on the App Store a while ago, but I never purchased it because:

1. I felt my phone wouldn't be able to run it.

And--

2. My screen is so small and my fingers are so big in comparison, that I wouldn't have been able to utilize the touch screen mechanics effectively (which is why I see mobile devices as a limitation if only to that effect, but that's just my personal view on that). Needless to say, I don't like my big fingers blocking the screen and thus blocking the action. Now that I think about it, I guess you can say I'm mainly worried with how a control-scheme that utilizes touch-screen input would work on a PC or with a controller (if the game should ever support controllers on PC). Of course, that is if touch-screen mechanics are the primary focus of the control-scheme.

However, you are right. Despite my personal preferences, if utilized correctly, the mobile platform isn't a limitation in its own right. I have reminded myself that a great mobile game called "Forgotten Memories" exists (thanks Two Best Friends for that exposure). I haven't played it (again, because touch-screens and big fingers), but based on what I've seen it looks great and the game-play doesn't look too shabby, either.

But that aside, let's talk more about expectations. I don't think that's something you have to worry about being met if you are straight-forward with what the game will offer for players. Players won't have to guess what the game will be like, because the game would have already shown them what it will be like, therefor removing the need to develop any form of expectation. Instead there will be the anticipation. The anticipation of finally being able to play the game. When they finally get their hands on it, play it and have a blast doing so. You called it a love letter to past great games within the genre, therefor I have no doubt that an audience will be found because this will be a game made for them, as well as for yourselves. If any of that makes a lick of sense.

In other words: Their minds will be blown. And they will take it. TO THE EXTREME!

That's really cool, Kinda wish there could be an Xcom game set up like this too...

I'll be sure to purchase it when it comes out! Sounds like an excellent game.

Might I ask if there is a player vs player option along with a fully fledged Campaign?

We could always throw in grays in a fun dlc...  I kid. :p

There is only a singleplayer campaign.

99% of people who've played asked for MP, to which I'd say it would have to be an entirely different game because of the amount of tactical depth to manage in its current configuration. It will most certainly be infuriating with teamplay. Imagine a MP coop-XCOM... me neither :3

We have discussed the potential of a "Strain MP" should there be popular demand... in that it would have to be a hybrid of the control systems we have now and twin stick style (yes, we had done some tests some months ago). And you control just a single unit, with far greater option for customisation and character progression. The mobile data dropping issue tho-- that would basically mean wifi-only multiplayer, so it would be "social, couch-based MP" with 1 host and 4 other buddies nearby, or if on PC then no observable distance limit I suppose.

Ahh... Understandable, I was just thinking If there could be one player who controlled the humans/droids, and another acted as the 'Strain's' commander in a sort of asymmetric Multiplayer... But Yeah that is probably a little too much. :P

I appreciate the answer Ukitakumuki! And well you could always have some of the soldiers throw in homages to other games (Maybe as a second wave option after beating the game once under options, could even have more silliness in there like sectoid knockoffs :P)
