Walker Assault by ukitakumuki Walker Assault by ukitakumuki
Battle-worn company of walkers moving quickly through a narrow pass.

I added my usual preference of wargear to the AT-STs, obviously keeping canon in mind and always making sure that whatever I've added have somehow appeared in SW stories at some point. In this image I thought it would be nice to show a different loadout for the different walkers in a company. The light footed scout to the left of the image sporting long range mortars bolted to the upper rear of the turret, communications antenna and 6-pack dumbfire rockets for harrassment. Also small, lightweight reactive armour plates to cover the vulnerable battery packs on the underside of the turret.

The main lead unit just has to have a nonchalant cool-headed gunner who is probably soaking in the sunrise :p, and it also sports 2 rotating grenade launcher mounts on its lower cheeks, plus a winch system under the main chin gun and shielded weapon systems.

Done for Sony Online Entertainment's Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game.

Your work is absolutely breath-taking.  PS- what are we looking at to the right of the lead walker?

There are mechs, there are walkers, but few capture what such machines are like for combat - the AT-ST in Jedi captured it for me and you have taken this to a new level.

It feels so feesable - I can see a convoy of them striding up the road, in line, troops sticking out of the top turret, fatigued. This image conveys it to perfection.

I could rant why Star Wars is not like this...but I won't.

Quality sir - just quality.

And my favorite, the AT-PT in the back! :D

Your AT-STs make sense. I'd feel safer in a company of your STs than the standard ST battalions.

What possible advantages would walkers have over say.....wheels?

Only thing I can think of is variable height, something with jointed legs lets you hunker down behind buildings for concealment and then pop up to shoot. AT-ST design doesn't allow for that sort of use, of course - it has to stand up to move. And I suppose you could put some sort of hydraulic lifting device on a wheeled vehicle to accomplish the same thing. Side-stepping? That's something a typical wheeled vehicle can't do.

George said the walkers were inspired by the tripods, from War of the Worlds. Originally tanks were thought of in the Hoth battle but to make it more interesting they used giant walkers.

Have you ever read "Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels?" It's filled with technical information, details and various configuration stuff on vehicles like the AT-ST. It even talks about the enlarged "assault walker" configuration that was slightly taller and heavier. By the by, is that an AT-PT on the right?

No i haven't, actually :) I do own a DK book on star wars vehicles but just for the art, not the fluff.

Yes, that is indeed an AT-PT :) The Art Director wanted it in.

Ah. Well, you might find it useful since it describes common field modifications, general proportions and all that.

I think this description he gave provided more info on mods for the AT-ST than most of those books usually have, tbh.

Oh yes, they've been getting better with descriptions in later years. The TCW-related books and the Essential Guide to Warfare have a lot of interesting factoids, as do the issues of DeAgostini's Starships & Vehicles Collection. But it's nice to see individual artists also come up with variations like this. :)

Ive always thought that the AT-ATs and the AT-ATs look extremely top heavy, and that they should be closer to the ground.
Then again, that would make their legs look stumpy and silly.

Hmmm...
